For those of you traveling from afar, you’ll be needing accommodation and Kyoto being Kyoto, it pays to book early. May is a very popular month for tourists and cheap accommodation can be hard to find. I would recommend that you book as soon as possible.

These sites are showing hotel prices at about 10,000-13,000 yen per night, but demand is high.

In addition to hotels there are numerous guesthouses, backpacker places with shared facilities and capsule hotels. Bust as with hotels, demand is high so book as soon as you know you are coming.
For those of you on a tighter budget, it is entirely possible to book accommodation outside Kyoto and travel into the city. If there is nothing available/affordable in Kyoto for the days you want, then widen your search. For example, Shin-Osaka is a transport hub with many hotels and the express train to Kyoto only takes 25 minutes and runs every 15 minutes.
