How can I join?
CA stands for Conversation Analysis, a socio-interactional means of looking at natural talk. The aim is to take commonsense understandings of sociality and account for them from the real-time perspectives of people who are actually engaged in doing them. We like to think of it as people-watching taken to its academic nth degree.

What is CA?
A data session is not a presentation; it more like a brainstorming session, but one where the aim is to hone our analytic skills. You don't need anything more than a pencil. One person will bring along a short video of natural interaction and a transcript of the talk. We will watch it many times and try to describe in detail what is happening in terms of turn-taking, sequence and action.

What is a data session?
What kind of data do you look at?'
Basically anything, so long as it is natural (unscripted) interaction. However, since many of our members are EFL teachers, we are particularly interested in bilingual and second language interaction, such as classroom or homestay talk in either English or Japanese.

Generally we meet once a month at the Osaka campus of Temple University in Umeda. Depending on availability, we also meet at other nearby universities, such as Kansai University or Kobe University. The data sessions are usually on Saturdays from 2pm to 5pm and many of us go out for a meal afterwards.
Where do you meet?
Nothing. There are no membership fees and no costs involved, so we don't have any membership fees. We don't produce a journal or an annual conference, although our members are active in presenting at other conferences, such as JALT and IPrA. Occasionally there may be expenses for special events such as retreats or guest lectures.
